Featuring a fishing boat bobbing on choppy waves, Survival Skills illustrates the cycle of life in motion, depicting the universal tug-of-war between man, nature and the animal kingdom.
Exposed to the elements, the fishermen are at the mercy of the water, braving the weather to cast their nets into the sea and capture fish for their own survival. Whilst the fish swim away from the boat, they are unwitting participants in a deadly game of tag, oblivious to the seagulls circling overhead, ready to swoop down upon their prey at any moment.
The individual photographs that were edited, layered and merged in the process of creating Survival Skills, were shot in various locations including the Bay of Bengal and Gold Coast of Australia. Enhanced with watercolour effects to portray a sense of calm and normality, the artwork depicts a typical day at sea.
As always, however, there is depth below the surface. Although the fishermen appear to be at ease, the seemingly tranquil scene belies the serious stakes at hand; a montage chronicling survival of the fittest, a game of skill, speed and chance.
